Festival roundup

Posted by Tony Jerome

It has been a really good year for GBBF and other CAMRA festivals around the country. We were over the moon to see a 7.6% growth in attendance figs, especially when you consider how the economy is at this moment in time!

Festival highlights:

(1) 64,000 through the door - up from 59,500 last year, which is a 7.6% growth.

(2) 1,400 new members.

(3) CAMRA celebrated the 100,000 member landmark!

(4) Girl's Guide to Beer Tours - 4 tours with 18 girls on each - sampling a variety of different beer styles around ...

That's it for another year, as far as the public are concerned. We hope you've enjoyed yourselves and we look forward to seeing you again next year, all 64,000 of you!

For us, we've now got three days to dismantle it all and return Earls Court empty to its owners before we all return to our normal lives and fulltime jobs.

Walking around today I was found by David O'Gorman (the dad), David O'Gorman (the son), Joanne Quinn, Suzanne Joyce, Russ Middleton, Murray Fastier, Lisa Wallace, Harry Willis, Chris Boarland, Daniel Chambers and Graham Le-Gros. Well done to ...

The festival's been open for over an hour and we've already had more people over the course of the week than we did in the entire week last year. We're heading for a bumper year thanks to you guys, so well done!

I'm off down to the floor now, having got all the nasty paperwork out of the way. Hope to see you soon for a beer. You've only got 6 hours left this year to find me! ...

CAMRA today welcomed the pensioners of Royal Hospital Chelsea to the Great British Beer Festival. The Chelsea pensioners were treated to music from the Denham Hendon brass band, snacks, and most importantly, beer. Despite the fact that CAMRA threw in some beer tokens, it looks unlikely they'll be used, as people were queueing up to buy the gentlemen a pint. ...

Day four done & dusted

Posted by Marc Holmes, Festival Organiser

What a day! Over 19,000 thirsty people descended on Earls Court today. Don't you know we're supposed to be in the middle of a recession stopping everybody from going out and catching swine flu?

As you may suspect we've lost a few beers, but we've still got over 300 to choose from. The Cider & Perry bar is still well stocked but we have nearly lost the USA bar.

Off now to the Volunteer Arms for a beer.
Cheers,
Marc. ...

It's a little known fact that CAMRA's National Cider Championships is held in Reading back in May. For those informed festival-goers, it'll be second nature in knowing that Gwatkin's Yarlington Mill is the best cider in Britain according to CAMRA. But to those not so immersed in the happenings of CAMRA's 150+ beer festivals each year, Yarlington Mill is at the Great British Beer Festival, and it's being unleashed on Saturday!

Denis Gwatkin is a gifted producer, ready to dabble in rum and whiskey casks during fermentation processes, and certainly not averse to churning out something a bit different.

Save Tetley's- one of Britain's most historic brewers

Fri, 07 Aug 2009

The Great British Beer Festival is the natural home to launch a national petition when one of Britain's most historic breweries is concerned.

Yorkshire's 17 branches have combined forces at the Earls Court spectacular, and put the wheels in motion for attempting to rescue the Tetley's Brewery, Leeds, which is presently owned by Carlsberg UK.

Last November, the Danish brewer blamed the challenging market conditions for its decision to close the historic Hunslet site in 2011, a decision that could cause up to 170 job losses in the area. Blaming challenging market conditions has been viewed as a ...

We've been open for an hour or so, we've got over 3,000 people in already and two of those, Will Burchell and Derek Burgoyne, have already found me for their free beer. Well done!

We're looking forward to a bumper day, and we've still got 474 different beers, plus the cider and perries. So I'm sure you'll find something you like. ...

Day three nearly over

Another good day with now well over 41,000 people through the doors, with Friday and Saturday to come. Some beers have run out but as we started with 425 you won't notice too much.

Well done to Ian Barclay and Hugh Pronto-Hussey for finding me to claim their free beer. Hope more of you have better luck tomorrow. Search early, search often!

The hall is nearly clear and I'll be off to the Volunteers Arms soon. See you tomorrow. ...

The 2.8% debate

The 2.8% debate

Thu, 06 Aug 2009
Posted by Jon Howard, CAMRA press officer

Where do you stand on the 2.8% debate? For those who've no idea what I'm garbling on about, CAMRA yesterday launched a new campaign to call upon the UK Government to introduce an existing piece of EU legislation that allows a zero percent beer tax rate on beers of under 2.8% abv.

In a nutshell, what we maintain is that consumers should be allowed to moderate their drinking, but more generally, experience greater variety and choice when going out on a quiet evening with mates.

There's already been some constructive feedback on this campaign, both online comments and ...

It's Thursday at the Great British Beer Festival and that means it is 'Hat Day'!

This year 'Hat Day' celebrates its 5th birthday and it has got off to a flyer with many of the early visitors through the door donning some fantastic homemade inventions, one of which includes a flashing light and siren!

There are also thousands of Hats on the tables around the festival that help celebrate CAMRA reaching 100,000 members. Fun hats such as sombreros, chickens and traffic cones can be purchased from some of the stalls if visitors feel they have a few pounds ...

Day two nearly finished

Time has now been called on Day 2 of the festival, and we've had a whopping 12,772 people through the doors - the most we've ever had on a Wednesday night!

Some more quick-fire stats from the day:

(1) 55% of people nationally support no duty on beers below 2.8%.

(2) 120 million people internationally have seen a story about GBBF since we opened.

(3) £12,500 raised for charity to date by Fred 'Betty Stoggs' Thomas, including his very own Page 3 photo in the Sun!

Aside from the joke headlines in today's press regarding women finding men with beer bellies attractive according to some no doubt intensively scrutinised research, you may have noticed there's a lot of furore surrounding more women than ever trying real ale for the first time.

Consider for a moment the new research from CAMRA showing the number of women trying real ale for the first time almost doubling over the past year from 16% to 30% of all women drinkers. Apart from such an upsurge giving huge hope to the industry during the current economic climate, it's a true ...

Mild - a classic beer style

Wed, 05 Aug 2009

Great to see a mild take the top gong in the prestigious Champion Beer of Britain competition. The winning brewery, Rudgate based in York will no doubt see orders for their Ruby Mild boom in the coming days and weeks. And quite right too. It's a rich, smoky, dark cherry coloured ale and makes a pleasant change from the current trend towards lighter golden ales.

Mild was once the most popular beer style in the country and today they are usually lower in alcohol content than bitters and other beer styles, but Ruby Mild is a little stronger ...

Time for a 'People's Pint'

Alistair Darling has a bit of a problem. The Government's coffers are, shall we say, a little stretched at the moment. On the other hand, with a tough general election only months away and more than seven pubs closing everyday, he knows that there are votes in pubs. Britain's punitive taxation of beer is a national scandal. We pay seven times more tax than the French and nine times more than the Germans. Alongside this beer prices in supermarkets are generally ludicrously low, and below cost selling is common. Pubs clearly offer their customers an amenity which supermarkets can't match, ...

A strong dark mild, Rudgate Ruby Mild (4.4%), has been voted the Champion Beer of Britain at the Great British Beer Festival in London (4 August). The beer is brewed in Tockwith, North Yorkshire, on a former airfield close to York. The beer is brewed with pale, crystal and chocolate malts and hopped with Challenger, Styrian Goldings and American Cascades. It has a rich vinous/fruity character with hints of chocolate, caramel and spicy hops.

After my pork pie breakfast and my pork pie brunch, I'm about to set off on my final walkaround of the hall to make sure it's safe to open. The queues are getting long already but everybody should be inside within 15 minutes.

The bars have been restocked and the food stalls are brimming. The re-order of the CBOB winners is safely on the stillage getting ready for later in the week.

Don't forget, print off this email and find me in the hall for your free beer! If you don't know what I look like, look on ...

The Great British Beer Festival is a great place that sometimes the written word can't do justice to. That is why we also produce a Podcast to give you an even greater flavour of the event.

Making the podcast is usually great fun, walking around with a microphone will get you a range of reactions from "interview me, interview me," to people running away at full speed.

When recording, it always sounds so good, but listening back to yourself can really make you cringe.

However, we must be doing something right as the subscriber count is rising ...

Well, that's the first open day nearly finished. We've just called time at the bars and very soon everybody will be on their way home, so us volunteers can go for a well-earned rest and a drink at the Volunteer Arms.

We've had a whopping 11,079 visitors through the door. But don't worry, we'd had an inkling we may get a few more visitors this year wanting to get away from the misery of the credit crunch and swine flu, so we ordered more beer! So there's plenty left for those of you coming later in the week.

For those of you lucky enough to experience one of the most anticipated events in the beer and pub calendar, I bet you, like I, felt a little caught up in the elation of victory for the winning brewers, particularly after a typically memorable Festival-opening speech from John Grogan MP.

There's no denying the Champion Beer of Britain competition make-up is a complex entity to non-members of CAMRA. For those not in the know, imagine dozens, dare I say hundreds of tasting panels, regional competitions, CAMRA branch recommendations and other intricate beer events throughout the CAMRA calendar year ...

GBBF today had its biggest ever influx of visitors for a Tuesday, the hard-working Foyer staff say. According to official statistics, 10,033 people had visited the festival up until 7pm on Tuesday, 1100 more than last year's record breaker!
"This is the busiest opening day we've had at Earls Court, hopefully it'll continue over the entire week", said David Pascoe, Foyer Manager at the Great British Beer Festival.

3756 members of the public bounded to the festival within the first two hours of the public opening today at 17:00. However, due to the refinements made to the festival ...

A few hours to take everything in and then it's down to the stage to oversee the announcement of the winner of the Champion Beer of Britain 2009. Then to take some of the winning beer to the Cornish Pasty stand so they can make some pasties with the CBOB winnier in the mixture. I've been promised the first one out of the oven. Can I wait long enough for it to cool down? Probably not. ...
